Innovators Spotlight: A Robotics Team That Printed Its Way Forward

When robotics startup Northbeam Devices walked into our studio, they had a gripper design that worked on screen and failed on the bench. Six weeks and eleven iterations later, they had a production-ready end effector that cut their assembly time by forty percent.

The difference was not a better printer. It was a tighter loop: same-day prints, structured test feedback, and an engineer on our side who treated every failure as data. Rapid prototyping only works when the iteration cycle is measured in hours, not weeks.

We started with PLA concept models to lock the geometry, moved to carbon-filled nylon for load testing, and finished with a small SLS pilot run of forty units. Each stage answered one question and retired one risk before money went into tooling.

The lesson for any hardware team: prototype the riskiest assumption first, print often enough that no single version feels precious, and keep one partner accountable for the whole journey from CAD to tested part.
